I just finished reading this 60's classic .... I can't believe I hadn't read it before.
I LOVED IT!!!
You might have seen the movie, and it's a great classic too ... but the book is even better.
I love the author, Harper Lee, too - what a strong woman! To Kill A Mockingbird (which won a Pulitzer Prize) is the only book she's ever written. The plot and characters are loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was ten years old. Did you know that Dill, a character in the book, is actually based on Truman Capote - who was Harper's real life friend growing up? Neat, huh?
Anyway, initially she did a few interviews in the early 60's, and then it seems she just got bored and fed up with all the stupid questions and publicity nonsense, and just went back home to Alabama and closed the door. A renown recluse (when it comes to publicity), Lee declines interviews and public appearance and refuses to talk about the book.
But boy oh boy, if you only had one book to write - To Kill A Mockingbird should be it.
